Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I here?
When joining a new company or team, we often encourage people to ask themselves, “Why am I here?” What is it about CAP that has interested you? Why did this position catch your attention? For many employees across the country, money is the driving factor. But at Consumer Advocacy Projects, we want to help you foster a career that not only allows you to put food on the table, but nurtures your growth and focuses on the more valuable aspects of having a job. We want to help you grow in an environment where you can feel good about the work you do every day.
What is a Direct Support Professional?
A Direct Support Professional is a team member that provides caregiving services to individuals with developmental disabilities, which can range from Down’s syndrome to autism to cerebral palsy and so on. The basic definition of a Direct Support Professional is a caregiver, but we want you to think of it as so much more than that. Yes, you will assist some of our clients with personal hygiene and behavior management; yes, you will administer medication as needed; and yes, you will be expected to cook and clean. But a Direct Support Professional goes above and beyond of providing the basic necessities of life: they bring meaningful relationships, trust, and life-long skills to our clients.
Am I qualified to be a Direct Support Professional?
Although we prefer to take on new team members with direct service experience, almost anyone can become a Direct Support Professional with the right tools and attitude. With our comprehensive training process, we can prepare you for the worst case scenarios and best possible moments, and we can show you techniques to better handle situations in our settings. While we can teach you the skills of being a caregiver, we believe that we cannot teach people human characteristics, like honesty and compassion. If you bring us those unteachable qualities, we will give you all the tools and resources necessary to do everything else!
