Frequently Asked Questions
When joining a new company or team, we often encourage people to ask themselves, “Why am I here?” What is it about CAP that has interested you? Why did this position catch your attention? For many employees across the country, money is the driving factor. But at Consumer Advocacy Projects, we want to help you foster a career that not only allows you to put food on the table, but nurtures your growth and focuses on the more valuable aspects of having a job. We want to help you grow in an environment where you can feel good about the work you do every day.
A Direct Support Professional is a team member that provides caregiving and advocating services to individuals with developmental disabilities, which can range from Down syndrome to autism to cerebral palsy and so on. The basic definition of a Direct Support Professional is a caregiver, but we want you to think of it as so much more than that. Yes, you will assist some of our clients with personal hygiene and behavior management; yes, you will administer medication as needed; and yes, you will be expected to cook and clean. But a Direct Support Professional goes above and beyond providing the basic necessities of life: they bring meaningful relationships, trust, and life-long skills to our clients.
Although we prefer to take on new team members with direct service experience, almost anyone can become a Direct Support Professional with the right tools and attitude. With our comprehensive training process, we can prepare you for the worst case scenarios and best possible moments, and we can show you techniques to better handle situations in our settings. While we can teach you the skills of being a caregiver, we believe that we cannot teach people those necessary human characteristics, like honesty and compassion. If you bring us those unteachable qualities, we will give you all the tools and resources necessary to do everything else!
Although the hours depend on the needs of each particular setting, we offer first, second, and third shifts for both full and part time opportunities. Simply put, no two shifts are exactly alike. We are the perfect employer for those looking to start a new career or continue gaining experience in a full-time setting, but we also offer part-time shifts, which are perfect for students or those looking for supplemental income. We also offer “pool staff” opportunities for those that don’t want to commit to a permanent shift but would still like to work a few hours here and there. As far as locations are concerned, we are all over the Phoenix valley, including Glendale, Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert. Chances are that, no matter where you live, we have an option that will work for you! We even offer training in both North Phoenix and Mesa to accommodate all new staff members, regardless of their location.
One of the best parts about working for CAP is the rewarding experience you gain by working with our clients. Your involvement makes a direct impact on our consumers, and you can leave work each day knowing that you made a difference in someone’s life. In addition, this opportunity is perfect for everyone, ranging from students to full time employees to those looking to get into the social services or medical field. We provide all necessary training and have locations throughout the valley.
